Man charged with 1984 killing in Germany

BALTIMORE, March 9 (UPI) -- A Maryland man has been charged with raping and killing a young nursing student in Germany in 1984.

Robert Brown Jr. was arrested by the FBI at the Baltimore apartment complex where he lives and works as a maintenance man, the Baltimore Sun reported. German authorities have requested his extradition, a process that could be a long one.

In court papers, German prosecutors say that they linked DNA found on the victim's trousers to Brown by comparing it to his daughter's DNA. Brown's wife and daughter remained in Germany when he returned to the United States.

Brown was in the Army when he first went to Germany. He left the military in 1983 but remained in the country until 1984 when he returned home soon after Nicola Stiel was killed.

Stiel was an apprentice nurse at the Bad Kreuznach Army Air Field.

Brown has long been a suspect. Stiel in her diary wrote about having a lunch date with an American named Robert and was seen riding in a car like one that Brown had rented.
