165 mph cyclone hits Western Australia

PERTH, Australia, March 8 (UPI) -- Cyclone George, packing winds of 165 mph, has battered the mining town of Wodinga in Western Australia.

Officials have yet to confirm details as emergency crews have been locked down since the category 4 cyclone crossed the Western Australian coastline, near Port Hedland.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that a paramedic had telephoned a report from Wodinga of injuries and a possible death at the mine.

The radio also carried eye-witness accounts from Port Hedland of heavy rain and strong winds lifting the roofs from houses, uprooting trees and downing power lines.

At last report, Cyclone George had moved inland about 45 miles from Port Hedland, which was still being buffeted by winds of around 90 mph.
