ABUJA, Nigeria, March 7 (UPI) -- The People's Democratic Party candidate for president of Nigeria, Umar Musa Yar Adua, is seeking medical treatment.

Yar Adua's spokesman Chief Ojo Maduekwe told Vanguard the campaign schedule has been "grueling" and the candidate is going for a "routine medical checkup" at an Abujan clinic during a "short break" from the campaign.

The newspaper This Day reported Yar Adua was flown to a hospital in Germany Tuesday evening.

This Day reported Yar Adua collapsed Tuesday in Abuja "from exhaustion." The candidate has a kidney condition, but says he is "fit and healthy."

The PDP presidential running mate Dr. Goodluck Jonathan apologized to Lagos state residents for the hardships they suffer in the oil-rich nation. Yar Adua missed a campaign rally in Lagos Tuesday. The election will be held in April.
