HOUSTON, March 7 (UPI) -- U.S. space officials Wednesday announced the firing of Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak, who faces charges of attempting to kidnap a romantic rival.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the termination of Nowak's association with NASA would be effective Thursday.
Nowak, 43, faces charges in Florida of attempting to kidnap Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman, a rival for the affections of Navy Cmdr. Bill Oefelein, from the airport in Orlando, Fla. Oefelein told investigators his affair with Nowak had ended in January, two months after he met Shipman.
A NASA statement said the agency decided to terminate Nowak "because the agency lacks the administrative means to deal appropriately with the criminal charges pending against Nowak. Because Nowak is a naval officer on assignment to NASA, rather than a NASA civil servant, she is not subject to administrative action by NASA."
Nowak was reassigned to the staff of the chief naval air training in Corpus Christi, Texas, effective March 21, CNN reported. She currently is on leave.
