TEHRAN, March 6 (UPI) -- Hamas leader Khaled Meshal, on a visit to Tehran Tuesday, said Palestine still needs Iran's help.
Mashal, director of Hamas's political office, spoke at a news conference after a meeting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's Fars news agency reported.
"Following the Mecca Agreement, we are still in need of Iran's aid and support for the Palestinian nation and government in order for us to be able to end the economic and political siege of Palestine and in creating a regional and international interaction with Palestine's national government and respect for the interests and demands of the Palestinian nation," Mashal said.
A statement issued by Ahmadinejad's office called for continued resistance to Israel.
The United States and European Union continued an aid boycott on the Palestinian Authority because the pact between Hamas and Fatah for a unity government does not include recognition of Israel and an agreement to give up violence. Meshal said any recognition of Israel depends on its withdrawal within the 1967 borders.
