U.K. Labor Party wants leadership contest

LONDON, March 5 (UPI) -- A poll of Britain's Labor Party members published Monday shows 73 percent favor a leadership contest when Prime Minister Tony Blair steps down this year.

The YouGov poll of more than 1,000 party members found the majority was not in favor of simply naming long-time challenger and chancellor, Gordon Brown, to lead the party, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The poll found if no one opposed Brown, he would win with 63 percent of the party vote. However, Environment Secretary David Miliband is also considered a contender and when asked about a Brown-Miliband showdown, Brown's support fell to 52 percent to Miliband's 25 percent, the report said.

The poll also found 70 percent of party members want Blair to resign either immediately or after May's Scottish and Welsh local elections.
