ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, March 3 (UPI) -- Protesters and police clashed in St. Petersburg, Russia, during an unusually large rally against President Vladimir Putin's government.

The New York Times reported that more than 100 people were arrested after police and protesters started fighting at the afternoon rally.

Garry Kasparov, the former chess grandmaster and a liberal opposition leader, had marched with protesters through St. Petersburg's streets and made a speech before police apparently decided they'd had enough, the Times reported.

Speaking over a bullhorn as police watched, Kasparov told the crowd, "We will have victory when we get our Russia back. We have 364 days before the election in 2008."

Minutes after he left the area, police broke up the rally by taking the bullhorn away from the next speaker and smashing, it, the Times reported.

The police put the speaker, Sergey V. Gulayev in a headlock and placed him in a police car as the crowd chanted "Shame! Shame!" the Times said.
