MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich., March 3 (UPI) -- Police in Michigan are searching for a missing 37-year-old man they suspect may have killed his wife and left her severed torso hidden in their garage.

While a lawyer for Stephen Grant alleges his client likely committed suicide rather than face capture, the Detroit Free Press said police in Macomb County have increased their manhunt after Saturday morning's grisly discovery.

"I spoke with him twice early this morning," attorney David Griem said Saturday regarding Grant. "And after the second conversation I had no doubt he was going to commit suicide within minutes."

While area officials have not formally charged Grant with a crime, police said they will likely soon issue a murder warrant for him.

Police have been searching for Tara Lynn Grant since she was reported missing by her husband on Feb. 14, five days after she disappeared following a reported marital argument.

The paper said that prior to Saturday's discovery of the torso at the couple's home in the Washington Township, Stephen Grant had maintained his innocence regarding his wife's disappearance.
