JAMMU, India, March 3 (UPI) -- The Indian Air Force airlifted nearly 9,000 travelers stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway to help them reach their final destinations.
Officials in India told the Press Trust of India that through the 61 military transport sorties conducted on Thursday and Friday, the stranded passengers were able to bypass the closed roadway and reach their destinations.
The roadway has remained closed for nearly 10 days due to increased snowfall in the region.
The Indian Air Force was pressed into conducting "Operation Humsafar" after Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier in the week.
Officials also informed the paper that Azad monitored the successful airlift transfer through the use of divisional commissioners and that all passengers involved were pleased with the service.
