Obama leads Clinton among blacks

WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Polls show Barack Obama gaining on Hillary Rodham Clinton as the two U.S. senators battle for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Much of Obama's gains come from black voters, the Christian Science Monitor reported.

In the latest Zogby poll, Obama has a 36 percent to 27 percent lead on Clinton among black voters. A Washington Post/ABC poll gives Obama an even larger lead, 44 to 30 percent.

In December and January, Clinton had a 3-1 lead among black voters, 60 percent to 20 percent, the Post/ABC poll said.

Clinton continues to lead Obama overall, but she is losing ground.

"We have a real horserace," said pollster John Zogby.

Zogby suggested that Clinton's refusal to apologize for her 2002 vote in favor of military intervention in Iraq is hurting her, and that some Democrats fear she cannot be elected president.

"Her third problem is that she has the misfortune of running against Jack and Bobby in one year," Zogby said, comparing Obama to President John Kennedy and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina to Robert Kennedy.
