Tribal fighting kills four in Ethiopia

MOGADISHU, Somalia, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A gun battle between two rival militias in the Somali-administered region of Ethiopia left four dead and eight injured, a report said Wednesday.

The Shabelle Media Network said four Somalis were killed in the Labo Baar and Baar Magoog regions in an intensification of infighting between area tribes.

Tribal fighting reached a new level after Ethiopian troops took dozens of elders and intellectuals from both tribes into custody recently in central Somalia's Hiran province.

While the government later responded to a plea from regional Somali traditional elders and released 20 elders on Tuesday, Wednesday's gun battle showed the situation remains tense in the African nation, Shabelle reported.

Those injured in the fighting were taken nearby Garihir village to receive treatment.
