WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Senate hearing Tuesday Iraqi troops are getting better but they're not ready to take over.
Testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Pace said the military is showing more promise than the police.
"They are good, for the most part; getting better, although uneven," Pace said.
Pace cited examples of the Iraq military taking charge of situations but said he could not "pick a precise moment in time" when they would be ready to take full control of the security situation.
"By the end of this year we should have a significant portion of the country turned over to the Iraqi provincial, Iraqi military and Iraqi police control," Pace said. "But to put a precise dot on the map ... or on the calendar, I could not do that. But we should have significant turnover this year."
