Czech, Austria experts to probe nuke plant

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- A joint Czech-Austrian commission will investigate safety of the Czech Temelin nuclear power plant close to the Austrian border, Czech media said Tuesday.

Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek and his Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer met in Prague Tuesday to discuss the issue that has been hurting bilateral relations since the Czechs put the plant into operation six years ago, Praha Radio reported.

Gusenbauer said visits by members of the joint commission should help in reducing hostility between the two countries.

Earlier this month, Austrian activists protested at a border crossing with the Czech Republic warning of possible dangers of the Soviet-designed nuclear plant. The activists urged their government to take legal measures against Czech authorities for failing to observe a nuclear safety treaty.

Austrians have complained the Temelin plant could develop problems similar to the Chernobyl nuclear plant's disaster in 1986.
