GUATEMALA CITY, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Four Guatemalan police officers who were arrested in connection with the deaths of three Salvadoran lawmakers have been killed in jail.

The officers were killed during a prison riot, La Prensa Garfica reported Monday. Officials said, however, they weren't sure how they died.

Guatemalan President Oscar Berger alleged organized gangs were responsible for the officers' deaths.

The killings are the latest twist in the case of three Salvadoran lawmakers found slain in Guatemala last week.

Eduardo D'Aubuisson, William Pichinte and Jose Ramon Gonzalez were found along with their driver in their bullet-riddled and charred vehicle.

D'Aubuisson was the son of the late founder of El Salvador's ruling Arena Party, Roberto D'Aubuisson.
