Terror threat in Britain described

LONDON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Intelligence documents say the threat posed by British al-Qaida agents plotting suicide attacks is greater than previously thought, it was reported Sunday.

"The scale of al-Qaida's ambitions towards attacking the UK and the number of UK extremists prepared to participate in attacks are even greater than we had previously judged," the document entitled "International Terrorism in the UK" reads, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

The document said there could be more than 2,000 terrorists in Britain, the Sunday Telegraph said.

"This document absolutely underlines the threat and makes me wonder why the government still has a counter-terrorist strategy that has been officially declared obsolete. It does make the government's response look hugely complacent," said Patrick Mercer, the Tory spokesman for homeland security.

The document also said that Afghanistan is expected to surpass Iraq as the locale for terrorist planning, the Sunday Telegraph reported.
