PROKOPYEVSK, Russia, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Officials Sunday blamed a methane gas explosion for a Siberian coal mine collapse that killed one person.

RIA Novosti reported the collapse at the Dzerzhinsky mine in the city of Prokopyevsk in southwestern Siberia happened about 11:45 a.m.

"At the moment of the explosion, there were nine miners in that section. Overall, there were 220 persons under the ground," Aman Tuleyev said in an interview with Vesti-24 TV, RIA Novosti reported.

Tuleyev said the family of the miner killed in the collapse will receive at least $38,000 in compensation.

He said the mine would remain closed until the cause of the gas explosion was found, RIA Novosti reported.

The Dzerzhinsky mine is part of the Novolipetsky iron and steel works, Itar-Tass reported.
