WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. governors are gathering in Washington for their first meeting since Democrats won control of Congress last November.
The winter meeting of the National Governor's Association, which begins Saturday, will focus a large chunk of its time on how states can create jobs, spur innovation and be more competitive, the Web site Stateline.org reports.
Creating new businesses is the pet project of Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, the chair of the association.
Intel Corp. and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are expected to provide some $3 million for better science, technology, engineering and mathematics education believed necessary for the creation of new ventures.
Also on the front burner for discussion is the issue of healthcare, an area where the president and Congress are clearly divided.
Tentatively slated to meet with the governors are Education Secretary Margaret Spellings and Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
