NEW YORK, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A New York state appeals court has upheld a New York City law requiring cabaret licenses for bars and taverns that want to feature dancing on the premises.
A five-judge panel rejected a legal challenge by a group that wanted bars to be free to have social dancing, the New York Post reported.

"Recreational dancing is not a form of expression protected by the federal or state constitutions," the court ruled.
Cabaret licenses are difficult for establishments to obtain. The 80-year-old law is aimed at protecting residential areas.
