SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A group of U.S. citizens touring Costa Rica thwarted an attempted mugging and killed one of their assailants, Al Dia newspaper reported Friday.

The tourists -- senior citizens traveling the region by cruise ship -- were held up at gun and knife point, prompting one man to grab one of the three muggers and put him in a headlock.

The man -- a 70-year-old military veteran -- reportedly broke the clavicle of a mugger, police said.
