QUEBEC CITY, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Quebec Premier Jean Charest has asked Lt. Gov. Lise Thibault to dissolve the national assembly and has called for a provincial election next month.
After meeting with Thibault Wednesday, Charest set March 26 as the date for the election for the national assembly's 125 seats, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
The is shaping up as a three-way race among the premier's Parti liberal du Quebec, the province's Liberal party and Action Democratique du Quebec.
Charest's party appears poised to increase its political clout based on recent pre-election polls. Quebec voters have begun to question Parti Quebecois head Andre Boisclair's leadership, the CBC said.
Charest's move comes in the wake of his announcement that, effective Jan. 1, 2008, extra health-care spending and income tax cuts would be implemented in Quebec.
