Separated conjoined twins ready to go home

ROCHESTER, Minn., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Officials at the Mayo Clinic say the 6-month-old Fitterer twins surgically separated at the Minnesota hospital Jan. 3 are ready to go home to Bismarck, N.D.

Abygail and Madysen were born conjoined at the chest Aug. 8, 2006, in Minneapolis. They have been at Mayo's Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital in Rochester since October.

Doctors say they are worried about the possibility of infection and will continue to restrict visitors.

"When the time is right, we look forward to introducing them to the people in the community who have been so supportive," Suzy Fitterer, their mother, said in a posting on the Mayo Clinic Web site Wednesday.

"For now, we just want people to know how much we appreciate all they've done for us."
