Emmett Till case to get grand jury review

JACKSON, Miss., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A Mississippi grand jury will review whether any additional charges should be filed in the 1955 slaying of black teenager Emmett Till.

Based on new evidence found during a Justice Department investigation, the grand jury is set to begin its review next month, and decide whether charges should be filed against Carolyn Bryant, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Bryant's ex-husband, Roy, and his half brother, J. W. Milam, were charged and later acquitted of kidnapping and killing Till in Money, Miss., after he whistled at Bryant in a grocery store.

The Justice Department investigation, which began in 2004, found that up to 14 people may have been involved in Till's kidnapping and slaying.

Till's cousin, Wheeler Parker, told the newspaper the family wants Till's killers brought to justice.

"It's progress, and I think it says something about America that we are making some progress," said Wheeler. "A lot of people involved will not be pursued or prosecuted, but even if it's not through due process, everyone reaps what they sow."
