FORT PIERCE, Fla., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A malnourished beaked whale found dead on an Atlantic Ocean beach in Florida is being examined to determine the cause of death.

The whale, which normally lives in the deep ocean, was found one mile from the St. Lucie Power Plant, the Stuart News reported.

The carcass was taken to the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution for a necropsy.

A Harbor Branch veterinarian said the whale, an adult female, suffered from cataracts and would have been almost blind. The whale showed no sign of damage to its ears from Navy sonar.

The carcass showed signs of shark bite but the veterinarian said those probably occurred after death.
