Soldier may have died in friendly fire

LONDON, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A British paratrooper awarded the Victoria Cross may have been killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan.

Military sources told The Sun newspaper that Cpl. Bryan Budd's Victoria Cross will not be withdrawn if friendly fire is proven.

Budd was shot in Afghanistan last August after he "single-handedly charged a position held by Taliban insurgents, allowing his comrades to withdraw to safety," The Telegraph newspaper said.

Britain's Ministry of Defense would not confirm how the corporal died. The newspaper said there were reports that an analysis of bullets showed Budd was shot with NATO ammunition.
