Fire out on Japanese whaling ship

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A fire aboard a Japanese whaling ship in Antarctica has been extinguished.

Maritime New Zealand spokesman Lindsay Sturt said the vessel, the Nisshin Maru, had a supply ship from the Japanese whaling fleet moored alongside to provide power.

The fire broke out Thursday morning and more than 100 crewmembers were taken off the Nisshin Maru while 20 stayed on board.

"Ventilators have been installed to clear the decks of smoke so that a search can be made for one crewman who is missing," Sturt said.

He said the ship was not leaking fuel and refused offers of help from Greenpeace members protesting the whaling actions.
