LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said this week that it may be too late to successfully turn the tide of ongoing war in Iraq in the United States' favor.
While appearing on CNN's "Larry King Live" Wednesday, the presidential contender said he isn't confident a positive turnaround can occur in Iraq, yet added that pulling out U.S. troops would only create future problems for the United States.
"I'm confident that we have to try to make a turnaround and we just can't walk out, and that it is critical to us that things get to the point in Iraq that we have some degree of stability and not the way they are now," he said.
Giuliani also spoke with host Larry King about his current role as the leading Republican candidate for the presidency, according to a recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll.
"I think I can make a difference," he said. "I believe that the country needs leadership."
CNN said since declaring his candidacy, Giuliani has come under fire for his stances on same-sex marriage and abortion rights, as well as last year's corruption trial of his former aide, Bernard Kerik.
