Clinton, Giuliani solidify leads in poll

WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani have expanded their leads over other contenders for the presidency in a recent poll.

A USA Today/Gallup Poll found that Clinton holds a 19-percentage-point lead over her closest Democratic rival, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, Ill., and Giuliani holds a 16-point lead over U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., USA Today reported Wednesday.

The in-party leads for both candidates marked an increase from January, when Clinton held an 11-point lead and Giuliani led by 4 points.

The poll also found that more than 4 in 10 people say they would not vote for a "generally well-qualified" presidential candidate who is 72 years old, the age McCain will be in August 2008. A total three in 10 people said they would not vote for a candidate who had been married three times, like Giuliani.

As for the obstacles faced by Clinton and Obama, 11 percent of those polled said they would not vote for a woman and 5 percent said they would not vote for a black candidate.
