BOSTON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A 10-year-old girl has been arrested by Boston police and charged with assault and battery for her alleged role in a brutal gang attack of a 22-year-old woman.

Marking the most recent attack by one of Boston's new girl gangs, the unidentified 10-year-old was arrested after she and three of her friends allegedly attacked the woman Saturday at an area department store, the Boston Herald said.

Police said that another 10-year-old and two teenage girls are suspected of participating in the attack, which reportedly began after the woman refused to apologize for bumping into one of the girls.

The 10-year-old in custody is the current focus of the investigation as police allege she kicked the downed woman repeatedly in the head and stomach.

The attack, which will likely lead to further criminal complaints against the other girls, adds to the growing amount of violent instances in Boston involving girl gangs.

The Herald said that area all-girl gangs were behind a series of attacks that left at least three teenage girls with permanent facial disfigurement, another teenage girl with a major stomach wound and an 8-year-old boy with four broken ribs.
