The violence apparently was provoked by President Lansana Conte's naming of his ally Eugene Camara to the post of prime minister, the BBC reported.

The nation's labor unions ended a strike when the president agreed to relinquish the running of the government to a new prime minister by Sunday, the BBC said. But angry protesters said that Camara will be a Conte puppet.
