BAGHDAD, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. Gen. George Casey told reporters in Baghdad Friday he is "not happy" with the security situation in the Iraqi capital.
Casey, who was confirmed Thursday as U.S. Army chief of staff, told a goodbye news conference as commander of the multinational force in Iraq the situation in Baghdad has been deteriorating since the bombing of the al-Askari mosque about a year ago.
"I'm not happy with where we are in Baghdad right now," Casey said, adding U.S. troops cannot resolve the sectarian rift.
"The bombing of the al-Askari mosque has set off a sectarian violence and tensions that have escalated -- across 2006, and we have been working very hard with Iraqi security forces to dampen that violence. But ultimately, it's going to take security and political and economic actions to bring that to a halt until the people of Baghdad can feel safe in their neighborhoods."
On another issue Casey flatly denied the United States had anything to do with this week's kidnapping of an Iranian diplomat.
