MECCA, Saudi Arabia, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Peace talks between the rival Palestinian Hamas and Fatah movements began Wednesday in Mecca with both sides vowing not to leave without an agreement.
Palestinian President and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas met with Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal to put an end to street violence between their militias, which flared in December and left about 100 people dead.
"We will not leave this holy place without an agreement," Abbas said at the opening session, echoed by Meshaal, Pakistan's GEO television network reported.
"We have come to agree and will not leave without an agreement," Meshaal said.
Hamas and Fatah have been at political odds since Hamas won a surprise parliamentary election victory in January 2006, hobbling the power of Abbas, the Fatah president.
Hamas refuses to recognize Israel as a state, which led many countries to stop financial aid, the Palestinian government is months behind in paying its staff and infrastructure workers.
