Education, trade top U.S. budget issues

MANASSAS, Va., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. President George W. Bush began selling his fiscal 2008 budget Tuesday, declaring education and trade policy the two most important economic issues.

Bush traveled to Micron Technologies in Manassas, Va., to try to drum up support for his $2.9 trillion spending plan.

"We need to make sure that we educate kids so that they can become employees in companies like this -- basic fundamental education," Bush said. "And encourage additional education for folks that gain skills to fill the jobs of the 21st century.

"Secondly, trade. If you're confident in what you make, you ought to be for trade because people are going to want to buy what you make."

Bush touted the strength of the U.S. economy and called on Congress to exhibit spending restraint and reform such programs as Social Security.
