Lesser charges in New York capsize

GLENS FALLS, N.Y., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The captain of the doomed Ethan Allen tour boat and the company that owned it will face trial in New York on misdemeanor charges, a report said.

While a New York grand jury recently ruled there was no cause to indict both parties for criminal negligence related to the boat's sinking Oct. 2, 2005, the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union said it was announced Monday misdemeanor charges would be filed against Shoreline Cruises and Richard Paris.

When the Ethan Allen sank in New York's Lake George 15 months ago, 20 people were killed and their deaths have since sparked three grand jury investigations and a series of civil suits.

This grand jury ruled both Paris and Shoreline Cruises will now face misdemeanor violations related to their failure to have the appropriate crew on board.

Such violations can result in a 15-day jail sentence, a $250 fine or both.

The paper said that both parties will be back in Warren County court on Feb. 14 to face those lesser charges.
