Ferry collides with cargo ship in Britain

LIVERPOOL, England, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- A passenger ferry and a cargo ship collided Saturday on England's River Mersey, a report says.

The BBC reported that while none of the 294 passengers on board the Sea Express One were injured in the collision, they were rescued before the ferry was returned to shore.

"There were no injuries to any person on the vessels," a Liverpool Coast Guard spokesman said. "All 294 passengers and crew disembarked safely."

The spokesman added that no one was injured on the cargo ship, the Alaska Rainbow, which is scheduled to remain anchored in the river until it can be inspected on Sunday.

While the cause of the accident has yet to be officially determined, a spokesman for Merseyside Ambulance said it appeared the cargo ship had struck the 16-year-old ferry during travel, the BBC said.

"The first reports at the scene were that a tanker had hit the stern of a ferry," the spokesman told the BBC. "We were called to the Pier Head. The ferry was able to come into the dock, although it was taking on some water. "
