CARACAS, Venezuela, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said the country's state-owned oil firm would assume majority control of four foreign projects, Globovision reported.
The leftist Chavez said Thursday the wells in the Orinoco Belt would come under 60 percent Venezuelan control May 1. The president said he hoped the foreign firms, including Exxon and BP, would stay on as minority partners on the projects.
Earlier this week, Venezuelan lawmakers granted Chavez wide-ranging executive powers the give him the authority to rule by decree for 18 months. During that period he has promised to complete his "socialist revolution" by nationalizing several sectors of the economy, including the energy industry.
The Venezuelan leader announced plans last month for a state takeover of the telecommunications and electricity sectors.
