WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush's nominee to lead Central Command, Adm. William Fallon, told a senate committee Tuesday current Iraq policy "has not been working."
The 62-year-old made the remarks in response to questions at his Senate Armed Services Committee, and said if confirmed, will still have a great amount of research to do.
"It seems pretty obvious to me that what we have been doing (in Iraq) has not been working," Fallon said. "We have not been getting the results that we desire, and we clearly have to do something different."
If confirmed, Fallon, a U.S. Navy admiral, will replace outgoing U.S. Army Gen. John Abizaid. Fallon is now the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific.
In another response, he hinted at using more diplomacy in dealing with Iraq.
"In addressing these and other challenges in the region, I would, if confirmed, solicit the opinions and suggestions of our allies and partners in the region and the world," Fallon said. "There is no doubt that other nations in the region could be helpful with the situation in Iraq."
