New trial denied for Ohio cage parents

CLEVELAND, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- An Ohio judge Monday refused a new trial for the parents convicted of keeping some of their 11 adopted special needs children in cages.

Michael and Sharen Gravelle had asked Huron County Common Pleas Judge Earl McGimpsey to either set aside the jury verdict or allow another trial.

But McGimpsey ruled Tuesday the couple did not provide any reason to change the outcome, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

A jury found the couple guilty of 11 counts of child endangerment and child abuse for keeping some of their children in enclosures built around their beds, which prosecutors described as cages.

The couple maintained county officials knew about the enclosures, which they said were necessary to keep the children safe.

The children, who were removed from the home in 2005, have all been adopted by other families, the newspaper said.

Sentencing for the Gravelles was set for Feb. 15.
