British police lost track of sex offenders

LONDON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A recent report saying British police have lost track of 322 sex offenders is putting pressure on Home Secretary John Reid, a report says.

While there are currently nearly 30,000 names on Britain's Sex Offenders' Register, Reid came under fire for the missing 322 sex offenders, The Telegraph said.

The criticism is the latest problem for Reid after he was bashed for inaction on travel bans against drug traffickers and deeper checks into national criminals convicted abroad, the report said.

David Davis, the opposition's shadow home secretary, said the disappearance of the sex offenders occurred through a registry flaw his Tory Party had attempted to warn Reid about.

"Yet again we see a serious failure of government criminal justice databases to do their job," he said.

The current registry system requires sex offenders to inform authorities of their locations after moving, a system that the Home Office admitted has a 97 percent compliance rate.
