SAN DIEGO, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- One U.S. sailor was killed and three were missing Friday after a Navy helicopter crashed about 50 miles off the Southern California coast.

Rescuers from another helicopter pulled one man from the downed Seahawk, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. He died onboard the amphibious assault vessel Bonhomme Richard.

The crash occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Friday during a training exercise involving the Bonhomme Richard, two other vessels and helicopters from Sea Combat Squadron 23, based at Naval Air Station North Island.

The search for the missing men continued through the afternoon and into the night, the newspaper said.
