Al Sharpton threatens presidential run

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- New York-based activist Al Sharpton says he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination again if current candidates fail to focus on civil rights issues.

Rev. Sharpton says it is imperative that those seeking the nomination emphasize affordable housing, access to wealth, retirement security, healthcare and education, The Washington Times reports.

Sharpton made the comments during a visit to Capitol Hill Thursday to meet with Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Joe Biden, D-Del., Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.

All four Democrats are seeking the party's nomination for president in 2008.

Sharpton entered the 2004 presidential race to denounce the Iraq war as well as put issues like police brutality and racial profiling, poverty and limited access to education and healthcare at the forefront.

While many wrote off his campaign, he placed third in the polls in South Carolina and second in the District of Columbia's nonbinding primary.
