DNA-freed convict enrolls in college

NEW YORK, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Jeffrey Deskovic, a freed New York inmate wrongly convicted of murder, has enrolled in college with law school in his sights.

Deskovic, 33, who confessed after exhaustive interrogation to the killing of a Peakskill, N.Y., classmate, had been in prison since 1991. He was set free four months ago after DNA evidence proved his innocence.

On Wednesday, Deskovic entered Mercy College to continue an education begun in prison. He called it a "mind-blowing" experience, and said he was determined to make the most of it.

This semester, he's studying Sociology of Violence and attending a seminar on readings from Marx, Jung, Freud and others. He needs 10 more courses to get a bachelor's degree in psychology and hopes to graduate by the end of the year.

Deskovic hopes to go to law school and someday work at the Benjamin Cardozo Law School that helped free him and nearly 200 others also wrongly convicted.
