A U.S. Embassy statement Monday said the Washington administration will begin negotiations on deploying a radar and interceptor missiles in the Czech Republic and in Poland.

Polish leaders in Warsaw also confirmed they are in talks with U.S. officials on the missile defense system.

Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, speaking in Brussels, said Prague had informed Moscow about a U.S. missile base in Europe and assured him it would not be a threat to Russia, Prague Radio said.

Interceptor missile bases in Poland and the Czech Republic should stop possible missile raids by Iran or North Korea, U.S. officials said.
