Bush to call for decreased gas use

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- President Bush will offer a proposal in his State of the Union message Tuesday to cut U.S. gas consumption by one-fifth in the next decade, CNN reports.

Citing Republican sources, CNN said that Bush also plans to increase the size of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He will call for increasing the fuel-efficiency of U.S. cars and encouraging hybrid gas-electric vehicles and other alternatives to the gasoline engine.

The White House said last week that the speech will touch on a few major themes instead of offering a laundry list of legislative proposals.

A CNN poll found that the president's popularity remains low, with 34 percent of those surveyed approving of his performance while 63 percent disapprove. An even higher percentage, 66 percent, say that something Bush has done in office has made them angry.
