BUCHAREST, Romania, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A Romanian opposition leader said he will warn the European Union of a dangerous rift between the country's president and prime minister.
Mircea Geoana, head of the opposition Social Democratic party, said he is concerned with developments between President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, HotNews.ro reported Monday.
Geoana said he plans to inform EU leaders in detail about what he described as a "huge political scandal" in Bucharest.
On Sunday, Tariceanu criticized Basescu for reportedly trying to establish "personal authority rule," the report said.
Last week, Basescu accused Tariceanu of trying to influence judiciary officials investigating a case of his friend. Tariceanu retaliated by accusing Basescu of trying to undermine his political position.
Basescu said last week Tariceanu asked him to influence prosecutors in 2005, but the president said he did not announce it earlier because he feared it might endanger Romania's accession to the EU.
Romania joined the union on Jan. 1.
