VATICAN CITY, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The late Pope John Paul II is close to being named a saint, a report says.
The Sunday Times of London said John Paul has already been credited with the three miracles required for sainthood.
Over the weekend, the cardinal overseeing the process said he expected the local dioceses to have checked on the three miracles by April, with a formal announcement expected on April 2, the second anniversary of John Paul's death, The Sunday Times said.
Pope Benedict XVI has already waived a five-year waiting period for his predecessor to be considered for sainthood. A similar waiver was granted for Mother Teresa in 2003.
One of the miracles John Paul is being credited with is curing a French nun of Parkinson's disease. The late pope also suffered from the disease. The nun was in the advanced stages of Parkinson's when members of her convent prayed to John Paul to ask God for her recovery in May 2005, The Times said.
