Sri Lanka rebels driven from key town

Jan. 20, 2007 at 4:23 PM

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Sri Lankan troops are reportedly advancing along a strategic coastal road against light resistance from Tamil Tiger rebels.

The government's advance in Batticaloa district was highlighted Friday by the capture of the town of Vaharai, which lies along the A-15 highway linking Batticaloa and Trincomalee.

A dispatch from India's Hindustan Times Saturday said the army had been augmented by forces loyal to a former Tiger commander known as Karuna, who split with rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran back in 2004.
