Guatemala: Ex-dictator seeks office

GUATEMALA CITY, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Former Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt says he plans to run for the Guatemalan Congress in an election scheduled for September.

Montt said he was confident he could win a seat, Prensa Libre reported. If elected, under Guatemalan law, the former strongman could not be prosecuted for rights violations.

Human rights activists in Guatemala have lobbied for Montt to be brought up on numerous charges stemming from the country's 36-year civil war.
