Four dead in high-rise fire in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A fire in a high-rise apartment building under construction in Dubai killed at least four workers and injured 60 seriously enough to require hospitalization.

Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the blaze late Thursday, the Khaleej Times reported. But an official told the newspaper it appeared to have broken out in the electrical room at the 34-story Fortune Tower.

The dead and injured were trapped on the upper floors of the building when they spotted thick smoke Thursday afternoon. Emergency officials said the fire took only 45 minutes to bring under control, but rescue operations took hours.

Most of the construction workers were Indians who had come to the booming Persian Gulf state for jobs.

Three men were pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, while a fourth died soon after admission. At least two of the injured were critically hurt.
