LONDON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- British Airways, reversing its previous policy, said Friday that employees can wear crosses and other religious symbols on the job.
The change follows a flap over Nadia Eweida, a check-in worker at Heathrow Airport, who was ordered not to wear a cross over her uniform, Sky News reported. Eweida, who went on unpaid leave, was considering appealing to an employment tribunal.
"Unintentionally, we have found ourselves at the center of one of the hottest social issues in current public debate," British Airways Chairman Willie Walsh said. "Comparisons were made between the wearing of a cross around the neck and the wearing of hijabs, turbans and Sikh bracelets. For this reason, we have decided to allow some flexibility for individuals to wear a symbol of faith on a chain."
The airline said it consulted with major religious groups on the issue.
