Woman gives birth to sextuplets

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Canada, the country where the world's most famous quintuplets were born, now has its first set of sextuplets.

The four boys and two girls were born at the British Columbia Women's Hospital and Health Center after 25 to 26 weeks gestation, The Province reported. They weighed less than 2 pounds each.

"They have a good shot at survival but there's a chance some may not become fully functioning adults," a source told The Province.

The source said that one of the babies was born naturally and the others by Caesarean section. The mother had been using fertility drugs to become pregnant.

Multiple births have become increasingly common with the widespread use of fertility drugs. There are now six sets of sextuplets known in the United States.

The Dionne quintuplets, delivered on a farmhouse kitchen table in 1934 in Ontario, were the first set of quints to live past infancy. The five girls were also unusual because they were identical.

They became international celebrities. One of the sisters died at the age of 20, and more have since passed away.
